ENSCHEDE, The Netherlands, - March 14th 2012 - Xsens Technologies B.V., leader in 3D motion tracking innovation, and the University of Twente MIRA research institute announce the founding of a Chair focused on Biomedical Sensor Fusion. Royal Swedish Academy of Science award winner and authority on stochastic signal processing Professor Fredrik Gustafsson has been appointed to head the Chair. The formal ties will also strengthen the collaboration with professor Gustafsson’ research group focused on Sensor Informatics at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University, in Sweden.

The new chair will be part of the Biomedical Signals and Systems (BSS) research group of Professor Peter Veltink, a pioneer in the application of MEMS motion sensors for measurement of body motion. Professor Clemens van Blitterswijk, director of the research institute MIRA strongly supported the initiative - van Blitterswijk; “Talent attracts talent. Xsens has established itself as a leader in the field of 3D motion tracking based on MEMS inertial sensors. We have committed ourselves to further strengthen the excellent position we have together to maximize our combined future impact in this exciting field. Miniature sensors are becoming ubiquitous – the next challenge is to make sense of all that data. The local eco-system we are building with world class brains, facilities and businesses will enable a new generation of entrepreneurs to be successful.”

Next to new research projects, an advanced course on optimal estimation, sensor fusion and tracking with a focus on biomedical applications will be offered. Dr. Daniel Roetenberg, researcher at Xsens and co-inventor of Xsens’ MVN inertial motion capture technology, has been appointed assistant professor at the University and will co-lecture the course.

Per Slycke, CTO and Founder of Xsens adds; “As an entrepreneur, and University of Twente alumnus, I am very excited about this initiative. Not only will it ensure Xsens access to top-class future employees trained in stochastic signal processing for 3D tracking, but more importantly we are looking forward to support new spin-offs from the University to see the knowledge and business ecosystems thrive.”
