To highlight some of these integration partnerships, we’ve created the Integration Spotlight Series. In this instalment, we feature TITAN Sports, a wearable GPS sensor technology. 

What is TITAN and how did you guys get your start in this industry?

We initially created TITAN as an entry point into the wearable GPS sensor space because of the exciting nature of the sports market and by leveraging hardware technology we had previously developed in the medical space. With our unique backgrounds in medical devices, consumer electronics, and system modeling, we saw an opportunity to revitalize the industry by commoditizing both hardware and software features that were reserved for only the wealthiest sports organizations as well as introducing novel features that are exclusive to the TITAN system.

We recently rebranded our company as TITAN Sports to reflect our expansion beyond GPS wearables as we continue to explore exciting opportunities to move sports technology forward and provide our clients with ever expanding capabilities. Our goal is to provide our clients with a distinct technological advantage over their competitors at every level.

How has your technology evolved over time?

Our technology has evolved to take advantage of a concept known in the computing industry as Moore’s Law, which predicts continuous year-after-year improvements in technology with simultaneous decreasing prices. Because the cost of delivering technology goes down each year, we are able to deliver features that were only recently considered advanced or elite such as video integration, real-time, sports tagging etc as basic features that are a part of a GPS system. Since Moore’s Law implies that today’s innovation is tomorrow’s commodity, we have to be dedicated to relentless innovation or risk falling behind.

Two years ago, we introduced the TITAN 2 which was the industry’s first triple GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and now just last month we introduced the TITAN 2+ which is the first GPS sensor capable of quadruple GNSS detection with 25Hz GPS sampling rate.

Can you tell us about your new product, TITAN 2+?

TITAN 2+ is unique compared to all other sensors on the market. TITAN 2+ is the first sensor to use uBlox’s (the company that manufactures GPS modules) top-of-the-line M9N chipset.

The uBlox M8, which everyone currently uses including the TITAN 1+ and 2, is capable of sampling GPS points at 10Hz (10 times a second) and can detect three GNSS (global navigation satellite systems) at a time. The M8 can increase its sampling rate to 18Hz, but only by throttling down to one GNSS. So you get a faster data rate but at the expense of data quality.

The M9 can sample GPS points at 25Hz with simultaneous four GNSS.  The M9 allows the TITAN 2+ to pick up incredibly fine positional movements with the maximum number of satellites possible.

What can Session Explorer offer TITAN users?

Session Explorer is one feature that we believe sets the TITAN system apart from anything else on the market.

GPS is basically position in time. Therefore, the concept is that you can essentially “navigate” in time through your GPS data. So just like a video you can pause, fast forward, rewind, and crop your data in time and not only visually see the positional points move around in space on a satellite map, but all the graphs respond dynamically to the data as it “plays.” You can add annotations and even take something that is traditionally very static like a heat map, and view heats maps by zones in both user-defined time and speed. It is a completely radical approach giving you the ability to see GPS data come to life on your screen.

Our QR Sync technology also allows users to automatically sync any camera to GPS time which is then paired to and can be controlled by Session Explorer in perfect synchronization with the GPS data.

Who should be collecting GPS data?

Understanding where athletes are in space is probably one of the most important pieces of information a successful organization can have on many levels. You can evaluate well established concepts like performance and player health, but we have also had clients use GPS data for turf management to ensure quality playing conditions as well as for fan engagement. In other words, everyone in an organization really should have a vested interest in collecting and evaluating GPS data.

What key insights can be gained from collecting GPS data?

It really depends on who is using the data. As I mentioned, there are (or should be) many stakeholders in gaining insights from GPS data. What we have found is that the most successful programs are the ones who are looking at the data on multiple levels and across multiple specialties. Injury management, performance potential, tactical evaluations, turf management, fan engagement, etc. All of these factors help contribute to building a winning franchise and all the economic and societal benefits that come from that.
